Pedro is now preparing to reach an important milestone in his academic journey with the defence of his PhD thesis, entitled:

Upgrading Nannochloropsis oceanica production – from cultivation to multi-product biorefinery

His work focused on reducing microalgae cultivation costs and increasing the market value of microalgal biomass with the overall objective of contributing to a more economically viable microalgal industry. More specifically, Pedro evaluated the feasibility of reusing the same culture medium during consecutive cultivation cycles and developed a multi-product biorefinery for Nannochloropsis oceanica, the marine microalgae used during his PhD research.
